Randy Bio

A lifelong horseman, Randy Schurig was born and raised in New Braunfels, Texas ~ mother, Doris Schurig, was a committed horse person who was instrumental in influencing Randy and his brother Kyle, especially in their early years.

Doris gained much of her knowledge working alongside Walter ‘Chappy’ Chapman, the trainer of the great Arabian stallion, Cass Ole, who was a national champion in Arabian western pleasure in the mid-1970s, and later became the equine star of the films, “The Black Stallion” and “The Black Stallion Returns.” Randy’s father, Paul Schurig, was active for more than 25 years as a show judge for paint horses, palominos, pintos, mules, and miniature horses.

As a youth, Randy Schurig started participating in local playdays and rodeos, honing his abilities in roping and speed events, then later changing his interest and focus toward judged events, which remain his specialty today. In the Texas 4-H horse program, Randy won the prestigious Showmanship class at the Texas State 4-H Horse Show two years in a row, in 1984 and 1985. He came back to place 9th in the State 4-H futurity for two-year-old horses in 1986.

Now, more than 25 years later, Randy Schurig has trained, handled or shown multiple World Champions in the APHA and PHBA breed registries, having been tutored under the guidance of the some of the best trainers in the business, including Guy Stoops, Danny Cannon, Bruce Walquist and Craig Johnson.

In 2011, one of Randy’s amateur exhibitors competed at the Paint World Show, garnering Reserve World Championships in both Hunter Hack and Equitation Over Fences, and in 2013, nabbed High-Point Champion awards at the San Antonio and Houston stock shows; and in 2013 at Paint World, went Top Five in Equitation and was Reserve World Champion in Showmanship. Also in 2013, a youth rider with RSPH was a scholarship winner at the San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo.

In 2016, two of Schurig’s amateur Palomino competitors brought home numerous titles from the PHBA World Championship Show, including Reserve World Champion in palomino-bred Amateur Showmanship; three novice amateur World Championships in Showmanship, Western Horsemanship and Trail, and the World Show High Point novice amateur ‘Golden Horse’ award.
